Doctors Say the Warmer world is an unhealthier place for children

WASHINGTON — A new international report by doctors says children are growing up in a warmer world that will hit them with more and different health problems than their parents experienced.

Wednesday’s report says global warming is already worsening conditions that spread diarrheal diseases, more dangerous heat waves, air pollution and increases in mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue fever and malaria.

But the report in the medical journal The Lancet focuses on an even grimmer lifetime health outlook for children born this year if emissions of heat-trapping gases aren’t curbed. Study authors say, children, along with the elderly, sick and poor, are hit hardest by climate-worsened illnesses.

Study co-author Dr. Renee Salas, a Boston emergency room physician, and professor at Harvard, says there is no greater health emergency.
